There are certain items that nearly all of us have in our wallets, purses, and pocketbooks.  Most of us have some cash, our drivers license (or other form of ID), a couple of credit/debit cards, and our Social Security Card.  Basically, everything you need to get by on a day-to-day business.

According to the United States government, one of those items should never be in your wallet.

A post on the Social Security Administration website states that you should never carry your Social Security Card with you.

Why should you never carry your Social Security card with you?

The biggest reason is that it could be stolen and used by scammers.  The combination of your Social Security Card, legal ID, and debit card opens up a whole new world to scammers.

Of course, there's also the fact that if you lose it, it is a pain in the butt to replace.  If you know, you know...

And, in most cases, you don't need it.  No, really!  Read more below.

Don't you need your Social Security Card with you?

The website explains that you rarely ever need the physical card.  With the exception of Pennsylvania, just knowing your nine-digit Social Security number is almost always adequate.

Yes, there are a few times that you need to present your physical cards )like getting a passport), but you will normally know that you will need it in advance.

So, it is far better to keep it in a safe place.  Fire safe, filing cabinet, locked desk drawer, etc.
