‘Father Figures’ Trailer: Owen Wilson and Ed Helms Go on a Road Trip to Find Their Dad
Is Goofy Comedies About Weirdos Connecting With / Finding Their Long-Lost Dads becoming its own genre now? If so, Father Figures is its latest entry, and it features Ed Helms and Owen Wilson having themselves a little Mamma Mia! of their own — except, instead of inviting all their possible dads to the same place, they go on the search themselves.
This movie features more than a few logical leaps: we’re expected to believe that not only are Ed Helms and Owen Wilson related to each other, their mother is Glenn Close. As evidenced in the trailer, this movie features more than one scene of some guy describing their mom in graphic sexual terms only for Helms and Wilson to say, “That’s our mother you’re talking about, buddy,” which is the kind of joke that’s maybe funny the first time. This trailer also features the phrase “PATERNITY QUEST,” and now I kinda wish that was the title.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Wilson and Helms are Kyle and Peter Reynolds, brothers whose eccentric mother raised them to believe their father had died when they were young. When they discover this to be a lie, they set out together to find their real father, and end up learning more about their mother than they probably ever wanted to know.
Father Figures is the directorial debut of Laurence Sher, cinematographer of The Hangover movies, also stars J.K. Simmons, Terry Bradshaw, Ving Rhames, and Christopher Walken, and hits theaters December 22.
