Ball Pits Were Invented Because of Onions?

I remember as a child always playing in the ball pit at the Bangor Street McDonald's. Now that we have kids we have a freakin' ball pit in our house! Oh how the times have changed. But do you know the odd history of the ball pit? My guess is probably not.

It all started more than 40 years ago in San Diego, California. This English dude, Eric McMillan and his team came up with the idea. But not because they were looking to entertain children. They, apparently, were just hanging out staring at a jar of onions (because that's something people do) and they started wondering what it would be like to crawl through all those onions in the jar- and thus, the ball pit was born.
