When Adam West passed away in June, he left behind an enormous legacy. But it’s not quite complete yet. Before he died, West recorded the voice of Batman for the upcoming direct-to-video animated film Batman vs. Two-Face. Above you can watch the trailer for the film, which also features West’s longtime chum Burt Ward reprising his role as Robin from the 1960s Batman TV series, and a newcomer to the franchise, William Shatner, in the role of Harvey “Two-Face” Dent. (Shatner sounds absolutely terrific in the role, by the way.)

This is the second animated film done in the style of the old Batman film from DC, following the well-received Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders last year, which featured the voices of West and Ward along with their original Catwoman, Julie Newmar. She will also appear in Batman vs. Two-Face as well. It’s really too bad that West passed away now, just as his classic Batman was enjoying a new wave of popularity, and this series of animated films was just getting underway. At 88, West was a bit long in the bat-tooth to play the Dark Knight in live-action. Bringing him and Ward back in animated form was an inspired way to continue their adventures.

In addition to the trailer, it looks like the Blu-ray for the film will be released on October 17, 2017 - or at least that’s when Best Buy says it will be available on its website. That’s going to be a bittersweet day when it arrives. It will be great to get one more Batman performance from Adam West; truly no one did it like he did. But knowing it is the last one we’ll ever get stings.
