More details are starting to come out about the officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday afternoon near the Merrymeeting bridge in Topsham.

WGME 13 now confirms the identities of both the woman shot and the officer who shot her. The article states that the woman, 37-year-old Kourtney Sherwood of Brunswick, was involved in an armed confrontation with police and she was subsequently shot by Topsham Police Officer Mathew Bowers.

Sherwood was taken to Maine Medical Center with critical injuries and Officer Bowers was placed on paid leave, as is customary in all officer involved shootings.

According to WGME 13, a woman has been critically injured following an officer-involved shooting near the Merrymeeting bridge on Monday afternoon.

Reports say that police were called to the area Monday afternoon to perform a well-check on a woman that was pulled off to the side of the road making apparent homicidal and suicidal comments.

Police attempted to talk to the woman but it quickly escalated into an armed confrontation. A Topsham Police officer ended up shooting the woman and injuring her.

The officer, as is standard police procedure, has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.

The identity of the woman who was shot is currently being withheld while the family is notified of the incident.
