The State Fire Marshal's Office is reporting that a Waterville man was killed in a fire early this morning (Jan. 25).

According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, the body of 60 year old David Chamberlain was found by firefighters in the rubble of his mobile home on Pooler Parkway.

McCausland said a neighbor discovered the fire about 3:30AM and the mobile home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Investigators are still attempting to pinpoint the cause of the fire, which destroyed the mobile home, McCausland said. Chamberlain’s body was located near his bedroom.

McCausland said that Chamberlain was one of two fire fatalities in the state overnight. In Gorham, Barry Dunlap,55,  died after a fire broke out in the kitchen of his home at 8 Bear Run, McCausland said.

Fire Investigators said it appears he was deep frying on the kitchen stove when the oil caught fire and ignited the kitchen cabinets.  Investigators said it appears Dunlap attempted to put the fire out and  suffered severe burns as a result.  He was found on the kitchen floor by firefighters and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The fire broke out about 6:45pm Sunday night after being discovered by a neighbor.

The two deaths are the state’s first two fatal fires of 2016, according to McCausland.
