Things You Need to Know Today: Police Say Canaan Horse More Likely Hit & Walk Away Than Dragged

Here are the things you need to  know today......

State Police are now saying the horse that died in Canaan more likely was hit  but not dragged by a car. According to WGME, police believe the horse was at the end of driveway in the road when hit and ran off and was not dragged.  Police are still looking for witnesses to the event.

The Maine Chiefs of Police Association is supporting Question 3 on November’s ballot for a background check requirement for private gun sales. According to centrlamine.com Question 3 would add background checks to most private gun purchases.

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding Valerie Tieman of Fairfield.  She has been missing for a couple of week and was last seen in Skowhegan.

President  Obama says he created the first monument in the Atlantic Ocean because the planet cannot be protected without trying to safeguard the oceans. The monument consists of nearly 5,000 square miles of underwater canyons and mountains off the New England coast. Fishermen worry that it will become harder to earn a living as a result of Obama's move.

Hillary Clinton says Republican Rival Donald Trump is fostering ugliness and bigotry by refusing to acknowledge President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Clinton made the comment Thursday at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Late Thursday, the Trump campaign issued a statement saying that Trump now believes that Obama was born in the United States.

Three young Americans who never joined the U.S. military but died fighting the Islamic State group in Syria will return home Friday to military-type honors. The caskets of Levi Shirley, Jordan MacTaggart and William Savage arrived at Chicago's O'Hare Wednesday. Shirley and MacTaggart's bodies will go to Denver and Savage's remains will arrive in North Carolina. The men died separately while fighting with a Kurdish guerrilla group. Turkey's tense relationship with the Kurds and the U.S. hindered repatriation efforts.

A Japanese court is siding with a central government plan to go ahead with the relocation of a U.S. military base on Okinawa island, despite protests by local residents. The court ruled Friday that the Okinawa governor's decision to revoke a reclamation permit allowing the relocation to begin was illegal. Okinawa says it will appeal Friday's decision. The relocation fight has been going on for some 20 years.
