Things You Need to Know Today: Canaan Woman Says Hit and Run Driver Killer Her Horse

A Canaan woman says a driver swerved into her front yard yesterday, hitting and then dragging her horse that was grazing in her front yard.  According to WGME, the vehicle dragged the horse about a mile before just leaving her in the road to die.

The Androscoggin grand jury indicted a woman on various charged for taking more than $150,000 from her victims.  According to WGME, many were elderly.

Another scam is going around.  Augusta police posted on their Facebook page about a scam to get money from a person by telling them they here hired to kill them and offering to not do it for an additional sum.

A new NRA ad against Maine’s background checks initiative has some upset. According to centralmaine.com it also has a bad Maine accent and graphics that are off base. Question 3 would require background checks prior to all private gun sales or transfers in Maine with exceptions.

Republican Gov. Paul LePage's administration is proposing a requirement that welfare recipients accept job offers as long as they pay more than minimum wage. The proposed requirement of job training participants is in line with approaches in other states including California and Pennsylvania.

Hillary Clinton's doctor says the Democratic presidential candidate is recovering from pneumonia and remains "healthy and fit to serve as President of the United States." Clinton plans to return to the campaign trail Thursday after her campaign said she got overheated at a 9/11 event in New York City Sunday. Her Republican rival Donald Trump took a jab at Clinton at a rally in Canton, Ohio Wednesday. Trump commented that the room was hot and joked, "You think Hillary would be able to stand up here for an hour and do this?"

Donald Trump says he would bridge the racial divide in the U.S. by bringing back jobs. In an interview with Bishop Wayne T. Jackson that aired Wednesday night, Trump said, "I'm the least racist person that you've ever met." The interview was taped Sept. 3 when Trump was in Detroit, visiting a black church.

The U.N. Refugee agency is calling on the world to do more to ensure that refugee children have access to education. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says that more than 3.7 million school-aged children who are covered under its mandate have no schools to attend. The U.N. General Assembly is getting ready to host a summit on refugees and migrants in New York next week.

A Syrian who was released from the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay nearly two years ago is in a coma after being on a hunger strike. Abu Wa'el Dhiab has been dramatizing his unhappiness with being resettled in Uruguay. A doctor says the 45-year-old had gone 12 days without water.

The World Anti-Doping Agency says that a group of Russian "cyber-hackers" called Fancy Bears has leaked another batch of confidential athletes' information from its database. WADA says on Tuesday that the group had released the confidential data of 25 athletes, including U.S. gymnast Simone Biles and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams.
