A Wreaths Across America convoy departed Down East Maine on Saturday, and the wreaths will be placed at headstones in the cemetery next weekend. The tradition began when Maine wreath maker Morrill Worcester donated 5,000 wreaths to Arlington Cemetery.This year, there will be more than 200,000 of them placed at Arlington alone. Tens of thousands more are going to be placed at veterans' cemeteries around the world

Police in Maine say a former university and Air Force chaplain bought a shotgun after completing treatment for substance abuse and drove to the home of his estranged family, where he killed his adult daughter and then himself. A neighbor discovered the bodies of 56-year-old Daniel Randall and 27-year-old Claire Randall on Thursday in Hebron. Daniel Randall used to be an affiliated chaplain at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island.

Maine is covered in snow, but that doesn't mean the drought is over. The Maine Drought Task Force said most of the state remains in a severe drought going into the winter. The ground will soon be freezing, so there won't be any major water-table changes until the spring, and that will depend on the depth of the snowpack.

Maine's public water utilities partner are partnering with the state to fund lead testing at schools. Three associations that make up Maine's drinking water community are teaming with the state's Drinking Water Program to provide financial and technical support for voluntary lead testing.

The Maine Department of Labor's Rapid Response Team is working with employees of the Verso Corp. Androscoggin Mill in Jay to prepare them for upcoming layoffs. Last month Verso announced that it would lay off about 190 workers and idle one of its paper machines, a digester and recovery boiler that support the machine in the first quarter of 2017.

A jury in New Orleans has convicted a man of shooting to death retired New Orleans Saints defensive leader Will Smith. Twenty-nine-year-old Cardell Hayes was found guilty Sunday night of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter for shooting and wounding Smith's wife. Hayes claimed he shot Smith following a vehicle crash on April 9 because Smith was drunk, violent and had grabbed a gun.

It could be a messy Monday morning commute as snow, freezing rain and rain pushes farther east. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for parts of the Great Lakes and the Northeast. As of Sunday night, the storm had dumped more than a half-foot on several states in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. Up to 10 inches of snow is expected to fall in parts of Michigan.

An official Chinese newspaper is calling Donald Trump "as ignorant as a child" after the president-elect again suggested that he was reconsidering how America deals with Taiwan, one of the most sensitive issues in the relationship between the U.S. and China. The Global Times, a Communist Party-controlled newspaper, responded Monday to Trump's comments in a television interview Sunday that he wouldn't feel "bound by a one-China policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade."

A Philadelphia Democrat who spent two decades in Congress could spend that long in prison when he sentenced Monday. Former congressman Chaka Fattah Fattah was convicted of misspending federal grants and charity money to fund his campaign and personal expenses. The jury found that the 60-year-old took an illegal $1 million loan.

A former JetBlue flight attendant who authorities say ran from security after leaving behind 70 pounds of cocaine at Los Angeles International Airport is expected to enter a plea to charges Monday. Court records show that Marsha Gay Reynolds will appear in federal court in Los Angeles on charges of conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine.
