A bill is currently making its way through the Maine State House that seeks to provide more state aid to struggling mill towns by reallocating education funds.

The Portland Press Herald reports L.D. 281 would alter Maine's education appropriation amounts once again, leaving some cities and towns that already experienced a significant drop in state aid with even less.

The bill was proposed in response to several mill towns losing key employers. Four municipalities were specifically identified in the legislation for extra aid, but the bill is now being rewritten to include a numeric trigger that could apply to any town facing a drop in tax value instead.

Education officials opposing the bill have suggested that additional funding shouldn't be taken away from other districts. (AP)
