Gov. Paul LePage has submitted a bill and issued an executive order that he says would grow job opportunities for veterans in the state.

LePage, a Republican, says his bill would refine Maine's existing hiring preference for veterans.

Republican representative and bill sponsor Rep. Sheldon Hanington says the bill guarantees an interview to any person who has served on active duty in the armed forces.

LePage's executive order calls on the state Bureau of Human Resources director to create a policy to help veterans get jobs with the state.

LePage says any veteran who applies for a state job but is not hired should receive guidance on other openings with the state.
