Gov. Paul LePage has floated the idea that he could play a role in a Donald Trump presidency, a move that might benefit a fellow Republican with whom LePage has had a tepid relationship.

LePage, a Republican, would have to leave office early if he served with Trump. The governor's term doesn't expire until 2018. Maine law says that would mean the Senate president would then become governor.

The Senate president is Michael Thibodeau, a Winterport Republican who has shown more willingness to work with Democrats than LePage. Thibodeau has criticized LePage in the past, including during 2015 budget negotiations. He says he isn't thinking about becoming governor.

The state last promoted a senate president to governor in 1959. Clinton Clauson died in office. John H. Reed became governor. (AP)
