The Augusta school board will be holding a special meeting tonight (Sept. 25) at 6:30 p.m. at the Capital Area Technical Center. The public is invited to discuss the elimination of crossing guards.

The paid crossing guard positions were eliminated earlier this year by a sub-committee of the school board because, they say, only a few students walk to school. Crossing guards were paid last year nearly $9 an hour for three hours of work each day. The city spent $52,500 in 2014 and $61,000 in 2013.

After some parents complained, volunteers were asked to serve as crossing guards, with no volunteers coming forward.
