I think we've all seen yule log videos.  They all show a burning fireplace and frequently have Christmas music running in the background.

The point?  To give people who don't have fireplaces something to run on the TV while they're opening presents on Christmas morning.  I can tell you from experience that they were really useful if you live in a rundown trailer like the one where I used to live.

Back in the 80s and 90s, some TV stations even ran their own versions.  I've never had this confirmed for me, but the rumor was WSBK's yule log was the highest rated show on Boston TV on Christmas morning.
