The Best Supporting Actress category was a tough one to predict this year, with five wonderful nominees all delivering some of their most vibrant work to date. But tonight the Academy recognized Patricia Arquette, giving her the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2015 Oscars for her moving performance in Richard Linklater’s Boyhood.

It seemed inevitable, and there were some other great contenders, but J.K. Simmons has been awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 2015 Academy Awards. Simmons took home the statue for his fantastic, unnerving role as Fletcher, the intimidating band instructor in Whiplash.

We all watch the Oscars for different reasons. Some watch for the sheer spectacle. Some watch to see if the movies they like actually win something. Some watch so they can drunkenly criticize what everyone is wearing. But in the end, it all comes down to all viewers doing the exact same thing: watching people thank other people for upwards of three hours. But which people have been thanked the most in 86 years of Oscar history? Someone with a lot of time on their hands decided to figure that out.

This Sunday’s Oscars will be the 87th annual Academy Awards. In nearly a century of honoring Hollywood’s best, the Academy has sometimes has made some bold choices, and some dumb choices. This gallery has them all; the complete history of nine decades of Best Picture winners in pictures. Some are classics, still watched to this day. A few are almost totally forgotten to history. (Cavalcade, anyone?) But they all won. Even Crash, somehow.

Here's some information for you: if you somehow ever win an Oscar, you only have 45 seconds up on that stage to thank anyone and everyone in your entire life. Then that music starts, your microphone gets cut off and the camera starts to pan away and then you have to slink off-stage quietly. Or, you could do what Alfred Hitchcock did with the shortest Oscars acceptance speech on record: just say, "thank you" and walk away. Yep, it’s that time of the year again. The 2015 Oscar nominations are here and it’s time for everyone to get outraged and cynical over which movies get the opportunity to take home statuettes of naked golden dudes. Sure, we always tell ourselves that the Academy Awards don’t really matter and that a film’s legacy will live or die for reasons beyond trophies, but we always end up getting angry about these things anyway. However, this year’s biggest snubs seems more egregious than usual and require slightly more yelling and stamping of feet.

Okay, so there was a fair amount of disappointment around the 2015 Academy Award nominations. Everything was not awesome for ‘The Lego Movie,’ robbed of a Best Animated Movie nod, and David Oyelowo’s dreams of a Best Actor nomination vanished when Steve Carell and Bradley Cooper’s names were mentioned instead. ‘Force Majeure’ got snubbed for a Best Foreign Language Film nomination and ‘Selma’’s Ava Duvernay was robbed in the Best Director Category. I just keep looking at the list of nominations and playing “Sad Trombone” over and over again. It’s basically the official theme song of the 2015 Academy Awards.

Well, that was interesting. Just when you think you've got the Oscars figured out, they throw you a huge curve ball. Or, maybe what's so surprising about this year's nominations is how nothing is really different?

Ellen DeGeneres certainly gave the 2014 Oscars ceremony the majority of its highlights, but audiences were left without a major "wow" moment -- and now we know why. The lovable and adorable Batkid, who took the world (and the internet) by storm, was originally supposed to make an onstage appearance alongside 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' star Andrew Garfield, but his segment was canceled at

Did you think that bit at the Oscars where host Ellen DeGeneres wandered into the audience to tweet a selfie with A-listers like Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper was a refreshing moment of spontaneity in an otherwise scripted affair? Wrong. The viral photo was actually part of a $20 million Samsung advertising campaign designed to promote the Galaxy Note

Lately when we think of movie heroes, we think of the superheroes that populate the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC's upcoming film slate, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reminds us that heroes come in many shapes and sizes. 'Captain America 2' star Chris Evans took the 2014 Oscars stage Sunday night to honor all of them in an adrenaline-pumping heroes montage.
