Disney Is Allegedly ‘Browning Up’ White Extras for ‘Aladdin’
Disney was met with anticipatory backlash upon announcing their plans for a live-action remake of Aladdin — the studio doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to diversity in front of and behind the scenes, after all. Despite hiring Guy Ritchie to direct the project, Disney publicly declared their commitment to enlisting regionally appropriate actors for Aladdin, which stars Mena Massoud as the eponymous hero opposite Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar. But according to at least one actor on the set, Disney hasn’t entirely kept their promise.
Another Marvel Hero Has Been Confirmed for ‘Avengers 4’
The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War dropped this week, offering fans a sneak peek at Marvel’s biggest film to date. Featuring the largest collection of MCU characters to appear together on screen, Joe and Anthony Russo’s super-sequel will pit our heroes against Thanos in a massive war over the fate of the universe. As such, we can expect a few of our favorite superheroes to bite the dust, but we now know of at least one more who will survive the Infinity War to appear in Avengers 4. Potential spoilers ahead!
‘Beauty and the Beast’ Is Returning to Select Theaters for Awards Season
Wonder Woman and IT made a huge impression at the box office this year, but both failed to overtake 2017’s biggest hit: Beauty and the Beast. Released back in March, Disney’s blockbuster reimagining of its animated classic is still the highest-grossing film of the year, and as we wade into the prestigious waters of awards season, the studio is making sure that voters don’t forget about it.
New Netflix Instant Releases: December 2017
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…Baby Groot nipping at your toes… That’s right. Netflix is giving subscribers an early Christmas gift in December as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits the streaming service — just in time for your family gatherings (or avoidance thereof). Unfortunately, with Disney set to launch their own streaming service, you won’t be able to enjoy the studio’s films on Netflix for much longer. Thankfully, there are a ton of other great, non-Disney movies hitting the service next month.
What’s Expiring From Netflix: December 2017
Bad news, everyone: All 11 seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are leaving Netflix next month. Good news: There’s plenty of great stuff — including Baby Groot! — coming to the streaming service in December. But just as tons of new titles are added, so must several others expire. It is the streaming circle of life. And time is running out for you to catch up with these titles before they’re gone — possibly for good.
‘Wonder Woman 2’ Will Now Be Released a Whole Six Weeks Earlier
Great news, everyone! (And we really could use some great news in the midst of this recent trash fire of a news cycle, right?) Warner Bros., in its infinite wisdom, has decided to move the release date of Wonder Woman 2 up — which means we’ll get to see the continuation of Diana’s adventures in the realm of totally unworthy men a little bit sooner than previously expected.
Louis C.K. Accused of Engaging in Sexual Misconduct With Five Women
This afternoon, the New York premiere of Louis C.K.’s upcoming film I Love You, Daddy was canceled amid reports that the New York Times was on the verge of publishing a major story about the comedian. That story is, as many suspected, a damning exposé on C.K.’s history of alleged sexual misconduct. Five women went on the record with the Times to share stories of uncomfortable encounters with C.K., the oldest of which dates back to the late ’90s.
Disney Reveals Full ‘Lion King’ Live-Action Voice Cast
As usual, Disney waited until late afternoon to make a major announcement, but it’s always nice to end the day with some awesome news. Today, it’s the full voice cast ensemble for The Lion King, Jon Favreau’s live-action (-ish) reimagining of the studio’s animated classic — and perhaps the most exciting project on their upcoming (and growing) slate of live-action remakes.
Michael Bay Is Producing a ‘Dora the Explorer’ Movie
Hi, friends! Can you tell us where the Dora the Explorer movie is hiding? Did you say, “In Michael Bay’s bank account”? Very good! …But also: What?! Michael Bay, purveyor of glistening biceps, incomprehensible robo-action and explosives, is producing a a live-action (emphasis on ACTION, am I right) movie based on the popular animated series. You know, for kids.
How Carrie Fisher Took Revenge on the Studio Executive Who Sexually Harassed Her Friend
There’s a lot to miss about the late, incomparably great Carrie Fisher: Her delightful screen presence, her sharp contributions to screenwriting, her brilliant wit and unapologetic candor, and her advocacy for those suffering from mental health problems and addiction. She was, for lack of a better word, a badass. And the legend of her awesomeness lives on through those who loved her, like Heather Ross — a screenwriter and friend of Fisher’s, who recently shared an amazing story about the time she was sexually harassed by a studio executive, and the artist occasionally known as Princess General Leia exacted revenge on her behalf.
‘Paddington 2’ Trailer: That Charming Little Bear Is Back and He’s Going to…Prison?!
Paddington is back in the new trailer for his incredibly charming and very British sequel — well, mostly charming. Everyone’s favorite Marmalade-loving bear is pleasantly minding his own pleasant business when an evil actor (Hugh Grant; no, really) frames him for a crime he did not commit and it is decidedly very UNPLEASANT. Dastardly deeds aside, the trailer for Paddington 2 promises a sequel every bit as charming as its predecessor.
What’s Expiring From Netflix: October 2017
By now you’ve probably heard that 30 Rock is leaving Netflix Instant, and if you’re anything like me, you are distraught. Inconsolable, even. The good news is that we still have Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Parks and Recreation, so there’s that, at least. Anyway, 30 Rock isn’t the only title expiring from Netflix in October, so let’s commence the mourning, shall we?
‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Pushed Back to December 2019
And in other, totally unsurprising Star Wars: Episode IX news… Following this morning’s announcement that J.J. Abrams is returning to direct (and co-write) the trilogy finale comes word that the release date has been pushed back seven months from May 24, 2019 to December 20. Meanwhile, despite a change in directors and Ron Howard’s ongoing reshoots, the Han Solo spinoff weirdly remains the one Star Wars property that won’t be released in December.
