I love planes. One of the things I really like about living in Augusta because I get to see planes taking off and landing at the Augusta State Airport and Maine Instrument Flight.  I also like things that encourage girls look at non traditions careers or hobbies they might love. So this event is right up my alley. This Saturday (August 2) the 80th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s visit to Maine will be honored with an informational display about Earhart and a special focus on encouraging girls and women to learn to fly.

The event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Members of the Maine Aviation Historical Society will be in a hangar at Maine Instrument Flight. They will have a display about Earhart’s visit to Maine, informational brochures about aviation opportunities and, weather permitting, free flights for women.  Cool huh?

There will also be a birthday cake for Earhart. Her birthday was July 24, 1897. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She disappeared July 2, 1937, in the Pacific Ocean while attempting to circumnavigate the globe. She visited Bangor, Waterville and Augusta Aug. 12-14, 1934.

Maine Instrument Flight is also going to be giving away one of their intro to flight certificates. I did that years ago, it was SO MUCH FUN!!!!

Saturday is a busy day for me, but I am making sure to take a few minutes to go and check this out!  Thanks Amelia for your pioneering efforts as a woman and a pilot.
